Photo Editing & Retouching

Comparison portrait of a woman with prob

Below are some examples of photo editing that help bring out the best in your favorite photos. These edits can be done on images that I have scanned at high resolution or on existing digital JPEG files from your archives. Just send me the JPEG and I will fix it.

Alterations include:

  • Removing distracting elements.

  • Portrait facial retouching such as removing blemishes, red eye removal, skin smoothing, face shape adjustment, eye enhancement, portrait studio relighting to correct unflattering studio lighting.

  • Shadow and brightness modification.

  • Color enhancement and styling.

Below is a picture of me in Acadia National Park, Maine. As with many photos from popular tourist spots distracting elements can sneak into the photo, in this case three people in the bottom right of the photo, small sail boat by my elbow and some clouds. Also, needed was a lighting and color adjustment to bring more vibrancy into the image. Simple edits like this take about 20-30 minutes.

Textured paper and the Stipple effect

Sometimes when scanning an old photograph on a flatbed scanner you will see little speckles in the scanned image because the old photography paper was sometimes either stipple or luster and had a slight undulation texture. Because the flat bed scanner uses up and down lights you get this stipple effect as the light scans over the photograph's  little bumps creating tiny shadows and highlights. So sometimes, rather than scanning it, it is better to correctly photograph the image using a full frame large format camera and studio lights. This technique is also used for digitalizing large photos or artwork that don't fit on the flatbed scanner. You can see more about this technique on the Oversized Photos/Artwork page
